American heavy metal band Dio formed in 1982 and was led by heavy metal singer-songwriter and composer, Ronnie James Dio. He fronted or founded numerous groups throughout his career, including Elf, Rainbow, Heaven & Hell, and Black Sabbath. He left Black Sabbath with intentions to form a new band (Dio) with fellow former Black Sabbath member Vinny Appice, the band's drummer.
