The Grateful Dead was formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1965 and quickly became the poster children for the counterculture movement. Their unique blend of rock, folk, bluegrass, country, blues, jazz, gospel, and reggae music made them arguably the most experimental band of the time and the founding fathers of the “jam band” genre that would eventually take on a similar sound. The band’s psychedelic overtones pushed their popularity amongst the hippies of the 60s to insane highs, with the Grateful Dead being ranked by Rolling Stone as the 57th Greatest Artist of All Time. The band has had a lot of members over the years, but after the passing of vocalist/lead guitarist Jerry Garcia in 1995, the remaining members in various groupings have toured under many variations of the band and continue to play shows today.
