Nirvana, one of the most influential rock bands of the 1990s, began in 1987 in Aberdeen, Washington. They lasted only seven years and released only three studio albums. In that short time, Kurt Cobain, their frontman became a rising star. His songs made him famous far beyond the Seattle “grunge” scene they came up through, along with other successful groups like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. At the time he committed suicide on April 5, 1994, Cobain was being called “the voice of his generation” by some in the rock media and in the few years the band was together, they sold 75 million records worldwide. Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014; while their music still sells, remains popular and continues to inspire modern rock and rollers who listened to them as children.
